The Model Unit is delighted to announce our success at last night’s TV Craft Awards, winning a BAFTA for our work on the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary story, The Day of the Doctor. Mike Tucker, Nick Kool and Alan ‘Rocky’ Marshall attended the ceremony at The Brewery in East London, along with representatives from Milk VFX, Real SFX, BBC Wales VFX and producer Marcus Wilson.

Sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller volume 33 is out this month, with an in-depth behind the scenes feature on our work on The Day of the Doctor.
The Model Unit is proud to have been nominated for a BAFTA Craft Award for work on Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor in the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects category. The BAFTA Television Craft Awards take place on Sunday 27 April 2014.
Filming miniatures constructed by the Model Unit for Doctor Who have now gone on display at the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff Bay.
The displays feature both the submarine models from Cold War and two dioramas from The Time of the Doctor.
In addition, the Dalek Emperor miniature that we constructed for the series’ re-launch back in 2005 is finally back on display after substantial repair and renovation by members of the original build team.

Watch out for Model Unit Supervisor Mike Tucker appearance in this episode, albeit in the guise of an iconic villain!
Following our work on the 50th Anniversary episode of Doctor Who, more of our model shots will feature in Matt Smith’s final episode, The Time of the Doctor, which airs on Christmas Day on BBC One. In addition, Model Unit Supervisor Mike Tucker is due to appear in the episode, albeit in the guise of an iconic villain!

The Model Unit’s involvement in Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor was for the Time War section, providing several cutaways of the Time Lord staser cannon (including its destruction), and a longer sequence showing John Hurt’s TARDIS crashing through a wall and destroying several Daleks.
